EVALUATION OF ANTIDIABETIC ACTIVITY OF STEM EXTRACT OF OCIMUM SANCTUM IN STREPTOZOTOCIN-INDUCED DIABETES RATS

The current study examines the possible antidiabetic effects of dried flowers from the Verbenaceae family weed Ocimum Sanctum on the metabolic profile of rats given streptozotocin to induce diabetes. In both the control and experimental groups, the effects of an ethanolic extract of the dried mature stem extract of Ocimum Sanctum on blood glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, plasma insulin, and liver glycogen were investigated. At 24, 48, and 72 hours, the blood glucose levels were lowered by Ocimum Sanctum stem extract. To confirm the sub-chronic activity, diabetic rats were given oral doses of 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg of the extract for 30 days. This resulted in a significant decrease in glucose, total cholesterol, and triglycerides, as well as an increase in insulin and glycogen concentration that approached normal levels in a dose-dependent manner. The findings suggest that Ocimum Sanctum stem can prevent diabetes in mice with streptozotocin diabetes. The stems’s high oleanolic acid content might be the cause of the action.
